We travelled to Tampa, FL to shoot this extremely special project: celebrating our parents 50th wedding anniversary. We specifically chose Ybor City, which is a neighborhood of Tampa rich in history and beautiful architecture. Ybor City was founded in the 1880's by cigar manufacturers and Tampa has preserved as much of the neighborhood as possible. Brick roads and elegant buildings allow you to step into a different era where immigrants of Cuban, Italian, and Spanish descent joined in a cultural melting pot. Over the years, the majority of cigar factories left and residents fled desolating and abandoning the area, but Ybor City has been able to stand the test of time much like our parents' marriage. Each year of their marriage brought yet another little wrinkle and with it a kiss, a laugh, and a prayer to spend one more year together. Mom and Dad were married in the Dominican Republic back in the 1960's and so, Mom being the super awesome seamstress she is made her own dress in the fashion of the time while Dad loved his Panama hat. We had a chance to ask them what it takes to reach 50 years and Dad said "Never go to bed angry at each other" while Mom said "Just be kind". It is something so simple but yet so difficult with many couples. Relationships, especially marriages, require an on going effort. Each day is like a brick you lay down to hopefully build a lasting foundation with a mortar composed of kindness, empathy, and love. It's not easy, trust us, we've seen it! But it is so worth it and amazing to see how even after 50 years Mom still blushes when Dad kisses her or how Dad now takes care of Mom due to her age. We were so glad to have had the opportunity to shoot this of most special moments in our parents’ lives. Here's to 50 more years Mom and Dad!
